Sabar (Senegal)

The Sabar is Senegal's most common instrument.

It can be felt at every family celebration, church gathering, in political conferences, Islamic religious festivals and market squares.
Many Senegalese say that if there weren't Sabar on these occasions people wouldn't go. The Sabar has become the main instrument of every Senegalese musical group.
Contemporary and traditional Senegalese popular music are generally referred to as "mballax" named after a traditional dance group from Sabar.
A Sabar group is the essential ingredient of this music.
